Core Subjects & Curriculums

Nature Study
Nature is full of wonder, and the best way to explore it is through observation, creativity, and hands-on discovery. Rather than using a rigid curriculum, we dive into unit studies that allow us to follow the seasons, spark curiosity, and deepen our connection with the natural world.

History
The way I teach History is basically that I am going through the timeline of Humanity era by era found in a World History Encyclopedia and unit study by unit study and then fill in the gaps with History Quest so at least, we have been through everything in those books.

Science
In our homeschool, science is all about curiosity, discovery, and hands-on exploration. Instead of following a strict curriculum, we dive deep into each topic through unit studies, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the wonders of the natural world.
Language arts
So, in the preschool years it went easy to teach Mathilde alphabet and the letter sounds but then when it came to blending sounds and how to go from that to actually reading I started to doubt myself.
Math
I love the Waldorf’ish approach with stories and learning about the numbers one by one and I had all these ideas of Math-Gnomes and story based learning, but Mathilde just wanted dive head first into the actual math problems.

History
The way I teach History is that I am going through the timeline of Humanity era by era —unit study by unit study —and then fill in the gaps with History Quest so at least, we have been through everything in those books.

Geography
We love maps and exploring the world and learn about different climates, cultures, and animals around the world and that fits perfect into different unit studies for us.

Health
We use the Oak Meadow health curriculum as our core in this subject — but mostly just incorporate it in all the other subjects.

Physical Education
My educational background in Denmark is Physical Therapy and I have always focused on developing both her fine- and gross motor skills. I incorporate movement throughout the day — we dance, do yoga, take a walk, or simply gets up and jump on the couch.
Danish
Since Danish is my first language and Mathilde’s second language, I teach her through exposure. My husband is also Danish, and we speak a mix of English and Danish in the household.
